What to do in Orio

Orio is a very pleasant stop to explore at an easy pace. In a single day you can combine the old town, a walk along the estuary, the beach and a good meal in the village. And if you feel like completing the route with a water activity or a cultural visit, there are also options without leaving Orio.

What to see in Orio

The old town of Orio is well worth a relaxed visit. Goiko Kalea keeps the character of this seafaring village and climbs from the church of San Nicolás de Bari up to the upper part of the town, through cobbled streets, stone buildings, balconies and corners that help explain Orio’s connection with navigation, boatbuilding and the estuary.

Beaches and walk

Antilla beach is the main beach in the village and one of the best places to extend your visit at a relaxed pace. It has services, showers, green areas, children’s play areas, bars, restaurants and a very pleasant promenade. If you are looking for a quieter spot, Oribarzar or Oribar-Zahar, inside the estuary, is a more sheltered beach with calm waters.

Ideas to complete your route through Orio

If, besides the walk, you would like to experience the Oria from the inside, Orio also offers water activities and proposals linked to the history of rowing. Trainera, kayak, SUP and Big SUP activities take place on the Oria. Many of these activities start from Arraunetxe, the place linked to rowing in Orio.

Traditional Basque rowing

A great way to try traditional rowing in Orio first-hand. Depending on the group, the activity takes place in a batel, trainerilla or trainera.

Where to eat in Orio

After the walk or the activity, you can complete the day in the village with options such as Mola Mola, Bodega Katxiña, Mirotza Taberna or Bodegón Sarasua Erretegia.

Practical information: public transport and parking

If you come by train, the reference station is Aia-Orio. Orio also has Lurraldebus connections towards Donostia and the Urola Kosta area, passing through towns such as Zarautz and Zumaia.

If you come by car and plan to spend a few hours in the village, the most practical option is usually to use the long-stay areas in Playa, Abaromendi, below the motorway or Munto. The spaces by the quay and in some central streets are more suitable for short stops or quick errands.

To organise the day at an easy pace

Orio is best enjoyed over a long morning or a full day: a walk through the old town, some time at the beach, lunch in the village and, if you feel like it, an activity on the Oria or a guided cultural visit.
