Discovering the Flysch in Zumaia: an experience that adapts to sea conditions
The Flysch of Zumaia is not just a landscape viewed from a boat. It is a territory that allows us to interpret millions of years of geological history, understand how the cliffs were formed, and discover the relationship between the sea, the rocks and the passage of time.
That is why at Begi Bistan we approach the Flysch visit as an experience focused on interpreting the territory, rather than simply as a boat trip.
The sea is part of the experience, but it also sets its own conditions. When it is possible to navigate safely, we discover the Flysch from the sea. When sea conditions or the weather do not allow navigation, the experience continues on land through our Plan B.

The Flysch is not just a boat trip
Sailing in front of the cliffs of Zumaia offers a unique perspective of the Flysch. From the sea, it is easier to appreciate the succession of rock layers and the scale of a landscape formed over millions of years.
But the aim of the activity is not simply to sail.
The aim is to discover and interpret the Flysch.
The Gipuzkoa Coast Geopark offers many ways to approach this geological heritage. That is why we have designed an experience that can adapt to natural conditions without losing its content.
When sea conditions allow navigation, the experience takes place by boat.
When navigation is not possible because of the weather, sea conditions or safety reasons, the activity continues on foot.
What happens when navigation is not possible?
Conditions in the Cantabrian Sea can change, and safety is always the priority.
When Begi Bistan determines that navigation cannot take place, Plan B is activated: a guided walking visit to discover the Flysch.
It is a land-based guided visit lasting approximately one hour, passing through some of the most representative places in the area, including the San Telmo hermitage.
During the route, we continue interpreting the landscape and explaining the geological value of the Flysch.
It is not simply a matter of replacing the boat with a walk. The activity retains its interpretive character and continues to bring participants closer to the territory from a different perspective.
Plan B also includes a gift from the “Cállate la Boca” collection, with a value of up to €15 for adults and up to €8 for children. If an item of greater value is chosen, the difference must be paid.
A responsible way to experience ecotourism
Working in a natural environment means accepting that not every condition can be controlled.
The sea, the wind and the weather are part of the territory.
Our way of understanding ecotourism is based on adapting to these conditions rather than organising the experience solely around navigation.
If the sea allows it, we sail.
If it does not, we continue discovering the Flysch from land.
In this way, the experience maintains its main objective: to discover, interpret and understand this natural heritage.
It also makes the tourism activity less dependent on sea conditions and helps the team working on interpreting the territory to maintain their activity throughout the year.
Two fares, so you can choose how you want to book
So that each person can choose the conditions that best suit their needs, we offer two options: Standard Fare and Flexible Fare.
Standard Fare
The Standard Fare includes a Flysch discovery experience whose format depends on sea conditions, weather and safety conditions.
When navigation is possible, the experience takes place by boat.
When navigation is not possible, the land-based Plan B is carried out.
In this case, the activity is not considered cancelled, and the inability to navigate does not entitle the customer to a refund.
Standard Fare prices:
- Adults, from 12 years old: €18.
- Children, from 1 to 11 years old: €11.
- People over 65, students, people with disabilities and large families, upon presentation of valid proof: €17.10.
- Children under 1 year old: free.
All participants must be included in the booking, including children under 1 year old who participate free of charge.
This fare does not allow date changes or refunds when the customer requests the modification or cancellation of the booking.
Flexible Fare
The Flexible Fare is intended for those who specifically want to book the boat experience and have more options if Begi Bistan is ultimately unable to operate the navigation.
In that case, customers may choose between:
- changing the date,
- taking part in Plan B,
- or requesting a full refund of the amount paid.
Flexible Fare prices:
- Adults, from 12 years old: €22.
- Children, from 1 to 11 years old: €13.
- People over 65, students, people with disabilities and large families, upon presentation of valid proof: €20.90.
- Children under 1 year old: free.
All participants must also be included in the booking under this option.
If the customer wishes to change the date, the request may be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled start time of the activity. The change will be subject to availability.
If cancellation is requested at least 24 hours in advance, the full amount paid will be refunded.
If cancellation is requested less than 24 hours in advance, or if the participant does not show up, no refund will be made.
Which fare should you choose?
The main difference lies in how a possible inability to navigate is handled.
With the Standard Fare, you book a Flysch discovery experience. If we can sail, it takes place by boat; if we cannot, the experience continues with the land-based Plan B.
With the Flexible Fare, you book the boat experience and, if Begi Bistan cannot operate the navigation, you can choose between changing the date, taking part in Plan B or requesting a refund.
