The adventure through the Basque maritime heritage that we propose offers you the opportunity to revisit and rediscover a common history: a past in which we share the primary need to go out into the world in search of a livelihood that our land did not guarantee and which resulted in the articulation of a naval industry that was one of the most cutting-edge until the 18th century.
The sea, which is a reflection of the culture of a society closely linked to it, has conditioned and characterised the development of our towns, both on the coast and inland, in socio-economic and cultural terms.
|Tuesday||Getaria: We invite you to visit Getaria by sea and by land to learn more about the place where Juan Sebastian Elkano and other great sailors were born. We will understand the reason for its historical importance in the fishing sector by analysing its geography, its products and its people.
|Wednesday||Zumaia: A tour of Zumaia will give us an insight into the past and present of Basque shipbuilding, as it is the historic home of shipyards.
Orio: We will share the competitive spirit by walking around and getting to know the capital of rowing. In this town we will analyse the importance of its location, the Orio has been and is a source of fishing wealth, transport and energy.
|Thursday||Mutriku: Enjoying the charm of Mutriku, we will get to know lesser-known aspects of the nautical-fishing sector, such as the work carried out by the women, without forgetting to analyse the illustrious figures who have left, or not, their mark on the town.
Deba: We will learn about Deba’s past as a very important commercial port and headquarters of traders. A perfect visit to learn more about the products for which the Basques were so important, such as their wood and iron.
