Reserva Ecoturista. España Verde: weaving ecotourism with soul and roots

Can tourism regenerate a territory, strengthen its social fabric, and contribute to the preservation of its natural and cultural heritage?
Yes—when it is driven by respect, rooted in local participation, and guided by a shared vision. That is the essence of Reserva Ecoturista. España Verde, a collaborative initiative that brings together authentic and sustainable experiences across the northern regions of Spain.

An interregional initiative with a transformative vision

Promoted by the governments of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, under the umbrella of the España Verde brand, this project has a clear mission:
to build a network of tourism providers who share common values and a commitment to ecotourism. It’s not just about promoting destinations—it’s about fostering alliances among those who view tourism as a force for positive change.

The Reserve brings together a diverse range of offerings—interpretive trails, rural accommodations, gastronomic experiences, scientific and cultural activities—all aligned with principles of environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and territorial authenticity.

Begi Bistan in the Reserve: a perspective from the Geopark

At Begi Bistan, we are proud to be one of the selected initiatives representing the Basque Country within this network. Our contribution is rooted in a program we’ve been developing for years:
interpretive visits to the UNESCO Global Geopark of the Basque Coast.

This extraordinary site, known for its geological, ecological, and cultural richness, offers the perfect setting for ecotourism activities that combine:

🪸 Environmental education – We share knowledge about coastal biodiversity, intertidal ecosystems, and the geological history of the flysch in a scientifically rigorous yet accessible way.

🚤 Sustainable mobility – Our adapted boats allow visitors to explore the coastline from the sea with minimal environmental impact and maximum educational value.

Living memory and maritime heritage – We connect the traditional fishing culture of our coastal towns with today’s sustainability challenges, encouraging a critical and caring relationship with the marine environment.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Local participation – We work hand in hand with scientists, educators, net-makers, local businesses, and cultural associations, because we believe that ecotourism must be built collaboratively and rooted in the community.

More than a label: a shared responsibility

Being part of Reserva Ecoturista. España Verde is not simply about joining a brand—it means embracing a model that puts people and the planet first, that promotes genuine encounters, and that helps forge meaningful, respectful connections between visitors and local communities.

Each visit we host in the Geopark is more than an excursion—it is an opportunity to see with new eyes, to listen to the voice of the landscape, and to reflect on the role we want to play in shaping its future.

An invitation to explore with care

At Begi Bistan, we invite you to discover this network of transformative ecotourism experiences. Whether you’re walking along ancient cliffs, engaging with living maritime culture, or navigating consciously by sea, every step within the Reserva Ecoturista is a step toward a more human, more sustainable way of traveling.
